Chapter History

SIN FALLA

In 1996, Bro. Anthony Ochoa and Bro. Robert Villanueva sought to bring a new fraternity to the University of Arizona campus. After much research and deliberation it was decided that they would take the necessary steps to found a new chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity Inc. in our local Tucson Community.

On March 29th, 1997, after many months of being educated by the brothers of the Iota Chapter at Colorado State University and the Tau Chapter at California State University-Dominguez Hills, 10 men know as SHIP SIN FALLA became the Founding Line for the University of Arizona colony.

The Kappa Alpha Chapter was chartered by the Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity Inc. Executive Board on September 20th, 1997 at 11:20am.

KA Chapter

The Kappa Alpha Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta at the University of Arizona has provided undergraduate college men the opportunity to become a part of a strong brotherhood that spans all across the nation. Since 1997, we have strived to impact the local Tucson community through our philanthropic efforts. 10 men took the initiative to start a chapter in our local Tucson community and over 20 years later their efforts continue remaining strong with the current undergraduate chapter. Since the creation of our chapter, we have successfully crossed over 100 brothers into the eternal brotherhood. This brotherhood has impacted our lives and we hope to continue the "kOrRuPt" Kappa Alpha Legacy for many years to come.

Local CHAPTER OPERATIONS
Part of the experience of being a brother of the KA Chapter is the professional development and leadership experience acquired through chapter operations. In order for our chapter to succeed we must all work together to perform day-to-day duties and tasks. Our brothers are able to express themselves and work on projects they feel passionate about.

The KA Chapter has 5 Executive Board positions and more than 15 Chairman positions in the chapter.

Chapter Philanthropies and Annual Events include: Victor Correa CPR Awareness, SLB Education Fund, "Opportunity for Wisdom" Scholarship, Relay For Life, Purple Rain, Founders' Week, Menudo Breakfast, Homecoming, and Chapter Banquet.

We are proud to have worked with the following organizations: United Sorority and Fraternity Council (UA), Susan G. Komen, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona,  TUSD, Tucson Meet Yourself, Tucson Parks and Recreation.

Brotherhood and Academics
We believe in the ideals of fairness, opportunity, and equality of all men without regard to their race, culture, or ethnic background.  Our biggest goal is to see that all of society can realize the importance of these three ideals.  In order to achieve this goal, we all strive to model these behaviors and present ourselves in a gentlemanly and educated fashion.

The KA Chapter has a strong history of brotherhood and really taking advantage of the fraternity experience. Whether we are going out to eat, studying for finals, taking a road trip out of state, or attending brotherhood retreats and leadership workshops; we understand that we must be there to support one another whether it's for celebration or in times of adversity.

Academic success and higher education is our end goal as collegiate men.  It is through our brotherhood that we can enhance academic retention and ensure a high percentage of graduating members as well as members pursuing post-baccalaureate degrees.

WHY JOIN OUR CHAPTER??
"There is a sense of optimism, passion, and excitement that surrounds the brothers of the Kappa Alpha Chapter. We know that we are capable of big things and work every week to continue the legacy of our 10 chapter founders, who left big shoes to fill. We have unique ideas, brothers, experiences, and memories; that is what makes us different. Since the establishment of the KA Chapter in 1997 up to our newest members, our members' personalities, interests, overall qualities have varied through the years so much so that it never settles into one cookie cutter mold. That is what makes this chapter unique."

“In addition to the vibrant personalities of the chapter's at the time, a big reason I joined ΣΛΒ was because I found opportunity to represent my multicultural background to enrich the brotherhood and my surrounding community.

During recruitment I was advised of one of the pillars the brotherhood lives by: cultural awareness. Knowing that I would be able to enlighten brothers to issues personal to me as well as build connections between the brotherhood and other identity-based communities on and off campus was important and exciting to me.

After joining in Spring 2016 I was able to accomplish this and it was a remarkably fulfilling experience. I was also able to be enriched by learning from other diverse brothers across the nation and become more culturally competent. I could have learned about people by making friends in college, but I was told that the love I have for my brothers will make the lessons I learn from them lasting. As an alumni 5 years later, I can say that is very much the case.”

“I come from a super rural and agricultural area in Idaho. I was the only one from my class of 24 to pursue postsecondary education outside of the state. Coming to the University of Arizona, I was in disbelief with the change in culture and having a hard time adjusting to the college lifestyle, especially since I was a first-generation student. I struggled with finding a group of people who I could relate to and could relate to me and my background. I discovered ΣΛΒ and instantly felt accepted, even way before I started the process to become an actual brother. They gave me a sense of community and belonging. I never would have imagined me joining a fraternity before coming to the University of Arizona. It ended up being the greatest decision I have made. It gave me a support system among culturally diverse student leaders, a home away from home, connections to brothers across the world, and ultimately, brothers who will stick with me until the end. ΣΛΒ is an amazing organization and I wish everyone had the chance to experience everything it offers.”

“My reason for joining a fraternity was to look for a home away from home. The reason why I chose ΣΛΒ over other fraternities was due to the diversity and inclusivity of this fraternity. Upon joining this fraternity, I found brothers stemmed from various regions of different cultures and backgrounds— many of which came from a similar background as mine. However, despite the cultural differences, ΣΛΒ demonstrated the true meaning of brotherhood. The relationship everyone had amongst themselves was genuine. It showed how everyone had each other’s backs and how they helped one another in their goals to graduate. During my initiation into this fraternity, I noticed this to continue to be true. Like a family, we have our up and downs, but that is what in the end, brings us closer together. LLLBBBBBB!!!!”

“The reason why I joined ΣΛΒ was because as a first-generation student, I wanted a sense of community where I could feel at home and be accepted. I wanted that family-type of support while I pursued my education at the University of Arizona. The fraternity has really helped me come out of my shell and made me more confident in myself.”

“I joined ΣΛΒ because coming into the U of A, I knew nobody. I was looking for a place where I could be myself and connect with other people who shared similar beliefs to me. In the end, I found brothers, I found the connection I was looking for, and I found a great group of guys that I would give anything for.”
